Learning at the Lifelong Learning Service
Because of the vast experience of adults in all aspects of their lives, we have developed a culture that supports a facilitative approach to learning.
Selection of relevant teaching strategies will be the responsibility of each member of the tutorial staff. However, all teaching and training methods used will aim to utilise the experience and opinions of adult learners. The tutors provide opportunities for collaborative working in pairs and small groups where learners can explore and develop ideas.
The overall aim of the Business Services Team is to create a context for learning that specifically meets the needs of adult learners.
In order to achieve our aim, learners will be encouraged to:
- Develop their communication skills by responding to points or issues individually or by working in groups.
- Develop their problem solving skills through group activities, role play and case studies.
- Identify opportunities to apply learning. Reflect on the learning and its application.
Some programmes will engage the learner in open learning. During this period, learners will engage in local open learning activities and through various forms of communication including telephone and e-mail contact.
Groups of learners following this mode of study will be encouraged to meet periodically. This will help individual motivation and enhance the adult and group philosophy that we at the Lifelong Learning Service promote. Moreover, we hope that learners enjoy their learning experience at the Lifelong Learning Service and will emerge from their studies with a greater knowledge of their subject area and the process of learning itself.
